Golf Supports Our Troops (GSOT)
is a non-profit organization with one purpose, and one
purpose only--to honor servicemen and servicewomen who
have given their lives in Operations Iraqi Freedom and
Enduring Freedom and to improve the lives of wounded
servicemen and servicewomen returning from Iraq and
Afghanistan.
No one involved in GSOT will receive any financial
compensation for their efforts. We intend to keep our
overhead to an absolute minimum to ensure that the
veterans' charities receive the bulk of the revenues.
Our goal is to give away at least 75% of gross sales.
We have applied to the IRS for 501(c)3 tax-exempt
charity status for Golf Supports Our Troops.
In addition to supporting returning wounded servicemen
and servicewomen, our Mission Statement also states that
we will "honor America's Heroes who have given their
lives in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring
Freedom". To that end, we have created
A Golf
Memorial which commemorates all U.S. troops who
have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. The memorial
presently consists of a series of eleven 4'x5' framed
panels, each containing the names of 300 American
Heroes. Embedded in the background above the name and
date of death of each soldier is a gold plated golf ball
marker bearing the official seal of his/her branch of
service. The center of each panel features a beautiful
American flag graphic. While we sincerely hope that
additional panels will not be necessary, we are
committed to updating the memorial until all of our
troops have returned home. We will eventually donate
the memorial to a public or private organization who
must display it in a permanent public access venue so
that everyone will have an opportunity to view it.
Why Golf Supports Our Troops? I don't think I have a
simple explanation. In my mind everyone should support
our troops regardless of one's personal views on war,
politics, etc. However, golfers are a group I can relate
to on a number of levels. I love the game; I play golf
12 months a year; I'm fortunate to have played many of
the great courses in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Ireland,
Scotland, England, Spain, Portugal and in a number of
other countries; and, I own a small golf company and
have enjoyed working in the golf industry. Since I can
make an immediate impact by donating my golf company's
profits and inventory to an organization supporting our
troops, Golf Supports Our Troops is a natural. I suppose
if I were a tennis buff and had a small tennis business,
Tennis Supports Our Troops would be the answer. There
are industry estimates of 25+ million golfers in the
United States. If we can persuade just 1% of them to
purchase some of our unique golf gifts and accessories,
we can raise millions of dollars for wounded veterans. I
guess therein lies the answer to "Why Golf Supports Our
Troops?" I believe that golfers will rally to this
worthy cause.
Thank you for visiting the Golf Supports Our Troops web
site.
Best regards,
Brian Coleman
