Suffering from laminitis -- a painful hoof disease -- Secretariat at age 19 was given a lethal injection on Oct. 4, 1989, at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky.  "It was a terrible day for all of us," Claiborne president Seth Hancock said. "We just couldn't stand to see him suffer."  The great superstar of racing was buried at Claiborne Farm.  "He wasn't just the greatest horse I ever had," trainer Lucien Laurin said. "He was the greatest horse anybody ever had."

At a time when America was engaged in the Viet Nam war, a great race horse brought Americans together through his exploits. Secretariat became so popular, Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated featured the horse on the cover the same week.  Today, during this time of America at war, Secretariat is still honored for his exploits in the same way as we honor our returning servicemen and servicewomen from Afghanistan and Iraq.
